VESL (Vocational English as a Second Language)
Impact on the Organization
Before starting ESL training, Quest usually conducts a brief
assessment (written and oral) of the group to determine their
current level and the amount of instruction required to get to
the desired proficiency level. Depending on the number of people,
the assessment can be conducted in two to three hours.
Program Description
Once we determine the number of hours of instruction, we usually
schedule two two-hour sessions per week. We use a conversational
method and the materials are geared towards English for employment.
Our instructor is certified and credentialed to teach English.
Also, he/she teaches management topics and understands the workplace
setting.
For these programs to succeed, we find that the individuals
must be committed to learning English. The most successful programs
are mandatory and conducted on company time. Also, the company
must provide reinforcement to the instruction. Supervisors and
managers need to ask about the training and encourage the participants
to use English when talking with them on the job.
Time Investment
4 hours per week
