Conflict Management
Impact on the Organization
Brought out into the open, conflict can be dealt with, but left
unattended, it can fester and cause a company severe problems.
In fact, conflict within an organization can destroy it. With
unmanaged conflict, you may have poor employee morale, wasted
resources as employees discuss the conflict (and whose side they
are on), lower productivity, and high turnover. Diffusing a conflict
before it can get to that level increases self-esteem in the "conflict-ees",
particularly if the conflict is between people in different hierarchical
levels within the company. Resolving conflicts shows the employees
that management does care what happens to them. Managers can
do this by applying skills and tools that work through the steps
of conflict management, resulting in agreement, or at least a
cessation of hostilities. Happy, "unconflicted" employees
are more productive.
Learning Objectives
- Explore potential areas of conflict.
- Identify actual sources
of conflict.
- Identify and apply nine conflict resolution approaches.
- Develop
a systematic process for dealing constructively with disagreement.
Program Description
This module helps participants identify sources of conflict
and provides tools and techniques for assessing and managing
conflict. It introduces a model for managing differences that
includes nine unique, approaches for effectively handling conflict.
Participants determine which approaches will help them be more
successful in dealing with and resolving conflict. Participants
work through simulations to learn how to best handle conflict
between themselves and others, as well as conflict between two
people that they must referee. Participants plan and practice
a conflict resolution session in preparation for dealing with
a conflict they currently have. Finally, this module highlights
six common conflict behavior types and how to effectively confront
each one.
Time Investment
Typically 4 hours.
